The story was weaker than the original. In Benji's second romp, we find him in Greece in somewhat James Bond mode (which they actually reference late in the film). While Benji remains easily the greatest of all animal actors, this movie doesn't quite have the charm.

In Athens, Greece, a secret agent named Stelios goes to an outdoor café where the waiter gives him newspapers and a package. The newspapers reveal that a German scientist is missing in Greece and the package contains a photo of the dog. The original film had viewers besotted with the dog and the pastoral countryside that he inhabited; Benji's antics and his smarts took up much of the screen time. Gabriel Bateman and Darby Camp are two gifted child actors who bring both realism. The eponymous canine character is a small, lovable mixed-breed dog with an uncanny knack for being in the right place at the right time, usually to help someone overcome a problem.
