Jack Warner's decision to take a flyer in high art would prove financially disastrous; the film lost heavily at the box office. But that's not what A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM was all about. The movie, "Midsummer Night's Dream" is a wonderful movie based off William Shakespeare's play, "Midsummer Night's Dream".
The movie was filmed in Tuscany and Lazio, Italy; there are parts from the movie that were also filmed in Rome, Italy. Max Reinhardt's production for Warner Bros. was the first screen adaptation of Shakespeare's play, and it was based on Reinhardt's earlier stage production at the legendary Hollywood Bowl. The desire for well-matched love and the struggle to achieve it drives the plot of A Midsummer Night's Dream. The play opens on a note of desire, as Theseus, Duke of Athens, waxes poetic about his anticipated wedding to Hippolyta. The main conflict is introduced when other lovers' troubles take center stage. For my money the most gloriously, enchantingly trivial play in the Shakespearean canon, A Midsummer Night's Dream may also be the most screwup-proof of the bard's works.
